Conceived
as a decorative refuge, the Zen Den is my ode to the great decorators of the past who
ventured into the realm of dramatic color. The white ceiling and the white floor help keep
the room from becoming gloomy. Tortoise bamboo blinds filter the southern exposure and
cast dramatic shadows all day long. The pallet bed was custom designed and lacquered a
molé brown. Its mattress and bolster are covered in a slubbed textured cotton. The
apothecary lamp is a classic hold-over from the late 1960s. The side table is of
indeterminate origin, but looks vaguely of T. H. Robs-John Gibbons. It is topped with a
piece of back-painted glass that helps reflect more of the Southern California sunshine.
