The first thing to
go was the beige plush carpeting. Removing the carpet, we discovered that the slab
concrete floors were in very good shape. There was little in the way of repair that was
required before the classic classroom vinyl tiles could be put down. The only
architectural changes made were the removal of a set of sliding glass doors between the
dining area and family room and the replacement of a window in the dining area with a set
of sliding glass doors. Now there was direct access to the pool from the living room. To
create a cool carefree interior, the color of choice was white with accents defining the
color schemes of the various rooms.
The pair of dark
wood paneled entry doors were replaced with a new set of French doors fitted out with
architectural ribbed glass. Not only do these doors admit copious amounts of desert
sunshine, the obscure quality of the glass provides privacy. The fireplace was original to
the house. The furnishings have been collected over the years awaiting their final
destination. A pair of vintage tub chairs were found languishing streetside. They have
been reupholstered in a jumbo houndstooth chenille in chocolate and cream. The faux Eames
chair and Plycraft ottoman have shed their somber black vinyl and look relaxed in
easy-care white vinyl. Simple geometric shapes in white laminate and polished chrome form
the bases for all the occasional tables. The Balinese head lamp was discovered in a Palm
Springs consignment shop just after we purchased the house.
