Situated in the
hills above Los Angeles, this small home built in l939 had fallen into disrepair.
Realizing its untapped potential, we set about recreating, revitalizing, and
reconditioning it to its former glory.
Much like starry-eyed hopefuls anxious for their chance in the limelight and their
graduation into starlets, our little house awaited its close-up.
Listening closely to its architectural whispers, we recast it appropriately with a sense
of 1940s screen style glamour. This two bedroom one bath home is nestled in the
hills with glorious airliner views to the north and to the San Gabriel Mountains. At night
the red taillights from the automobiles on the freeway form an ever-changing kinetic
canvas.
The program called for recreating the mood of the 1940s within a vintage budget. All
the furnishings have been ferreted out of junk shops and thrift stores. These are
supplemented with custom projects that are easily managed in the course of a weekend.
For each room, a special color has been chosen. These dusty, pastel colors are plucked
straight from history. The softly grayed tones help to recreate the mood of bygone days.
To unify the architecture of the house, all the molding and doors have been picked out in
a creamy, glossy white. This helps with the transitions of space. To create a bright
cheery feel, all the ceilings have also been painted bright white. The original wood
floors throughout have been sanded and resealed with high gloss polyurethane. The sheen of
the floors reflect the lights of the city. |
