Years of hoarding dated fabrics and drapery panels have finally paid off. A pair
of vintage panels set the tone for the bedroom. Inspired by 1940s screen siren,
Carmen Miranda, bamboo stalks are used as drapery rods. The rods are mounted near the
ceiling to visually raise the windows height. Rattan blinds are hung behind the
bamboo rods. Decorative iron rings are sewn on the drapery panels to complete the look.
Cleopatra had one. So did Claudette Colbert. What could be better to evoke the style of
Hollywood glamour than a barge bed? So one is moored here. Beginning life as a pine sleigh
bed (perhaps more appropriate in a Bergman film), we enhanced its exotic feel with a faux
wood finish. Coats of polyurethane steel wooled and waxed to a deep luster give it its
subtle sheen.
A nondescript two-door cabinet has been given a make-over. A drab avocado green paint
finish was spruced up with Joan Crawford Blue ground color over which bosomy blooms have
been decoupaged. Finally, a crazed varnish is applied to give the cabinet its vintage
appeal.
In lieu of nightstands, a small drop-leaf cricket table plays the supporting role. It
floats in front of the barge bed, just large enough to hold bedside essentials. The
painted top and shelf echo the leafy colors found in the draperies and decoupage cabinet,
without calling too much attention to itself.
A pair of bolsters gives the bed a daybed feel. Just like Greta Garbo in Queen Christina,
one can receive guests in the boudoir. The pale pink adds feminine charm as does the
vermicelli quilting. This is the perfect place to retire after a grueling day at the
studio. |
